The history of Elounda village is not only rich but exciting too

The famous islet of Spinalogga at very close proximity to Plaka north of Elounda village. It was fortified by the Venetians and at the beginning of the 20th century it became a place of exile for the lepers. The institution discontinued operation in 1957 and visitors can visit the islet via small boats which leave from both Plaka and Elounda.

Right next to the sea shores and the port, Lake Voulismeni formulates a beautifully picturesque gulf within the town of Aghios Nikolaos. The lake has a circular shape, it stretches across 137 meters and has a depth of 64 meters. It connects to the sea via a narrow canal and it is worthy of your visit for a pleasant promenade, at the shops and the park that surround it.

Around Elounda village, the visitors will find a great selection of beautiful beaches for all tastes. Certainly, the most famous of all and the most organized with sun-beds and parasols, is the sandy beach named Elounda at very close proximity to the port and the luxury resorts. Plaka beach is a pebbly one and offers views to the islet of Spinalogga, while heading East of Elounda, there is also the sandy beach of Shisma.
