Lake Vouliagmeni and its mysteriously hidden secrets…

After signing the Rio Convention for the conservation of global biodiversity - signed by at least 150 member states of the UN - the Greek state took enormous responsibilities for the conservation of its natural environment. According to professor of geology Mrs. Athena Zamani, the lake’s existence is not recorded by any ancient author, not even by Pausanias who described the Vouliagmeni peninsula. The stalactite specimens visible at the lake, testify that the lake’s shape has changed in the passing of years.

The lake’s location was in the past partially covered by a large cave whose top collapsed due to erosion and tectonic events that took place about 2000 years ago. Nowadays, the entrance of a labyrinth-like underwater cave opens at the bottom of the lake which extends for at least 3.123 meters within the limestone geology of the area.

It accounts for one of the most impressive caves of the Attica region. It is certain that human lives have been lost in the depths of the lake which simply wishes to mysteriously hide its secrets. According to references, the cave was investigated by the conquerors during the 1940s. The elite of German climbers, scientists and well trained commandos were used for this extensive explorative expedition back then. Since then, the lake still holds on tight to its mysterious past and present. Lake Vouliagmeni is one of the most impressive natural sights in Athens. A salty lake whose actual depth or connection to the sea has never been discovered...
