Lake Stymphalia: beautiful location and a rich mythology that will reward us for our visit

Spending Christmas in the county of Korinthia? Plan a visit to Stymphalia lake. A lake that has been associated with numerous myths and will simply enchant you with its natural beauty...

Stymphalia lake is located between the two mountains of the county of Korinthia, Ziria and Oligirtos. During the winter months the lake stretches over an area of, as many as, 7.700 acres and has a depth of 10 meters.

The lake’s name derives from Stymphalos who was the son of King Arkadas and its history is mainly associated with Hercules and his Sixth Labour which was to exterminate the Stymphalian Birds that lived in the lake but caused many problems in the area at large.

Nowadays, the lake plays a vital role for the irrigation of the valley that surrounds it, through a system of naturally formatted cesspools which channel water in tunnels, thus transforming it to one of the most beautiful and most interesting wetlands of the Peloponnesian peninsula.

The lake of Stymphalia attracts, hosts and constitutes a natural habitat of a plethora of bird species which count over 133 in number. All of them are listed as protected and -from time to time- even more threatened species and migrating birds make their appearance.
