Sunday walk in the alleys of the town of Trikala

Sunday walk in the alleys of the town of Trikala

The picturesque river Litheos flows through the town of Trikala and acquires a top position in the list of sites worthy to see during your visit. But, walking through the alleys of the town you will also discover a plethora of interesting spots.

Begin by taking a stoll within the quarter of Varoussi where you will see the old Turkish housing settlement dating back to, mainly, the 17th and 18th century. You will be conveyed to a different epoch, where time seems to have forgotten this corner of Trikala where the houses are built in an erratic way, with their second floor protruding and are painted in bright colours, such as green, pink, indigo blue and light mauve.

Only a few of these houses have been restored and refurbished due to the fact that the whole settlement is listed as a preserved one and strict rules apply for new buildings, as far as urban planning and architectural styling is concerned. The town of Trikala is where the famous Greek songwriter and bouzouki player Vassilis Tsitsanis was born. In his career, he wrote more than 500 songs, one of which actually referred to the particular quarter of Varoussi.

As you exit the quarter of Varoussi, you will face the gate of the Frourio fortress, as well as the large Clock which constitutes the town’s trademark. Climbing up the numerous stairs will bring you at a height of thirty three meters and give you views to the whole town from above with its countless red roofs, as well as, an extensive view of the beauty of the glorious Thessalic plains. The clock was first built during the Ottoman occupation in 1648, but later it was destroyed only for the new one to take its place in 1936.

After your interesting and invigorating walk, select Oltre Bar Restaurant for a delicious meal. Oltre Bar constitutes the absolute hot spot of the area attracting both repeating customers and passing-by visitors at all seasons. Situated at the top floor of Αnanti City Resort, it boasts magnificent views to the town of Trikala in an ambience of high aesthetics and atmospheric lighting which could only connote to a Hollywood film noir.
