Hydra island among the most beautiful places in Greece, according to Austrian newspaper

Austrian newspaper Kurier mentions Hydra in its article with a central title "Greece without a car".

The article also refers to the island as a “rich in wild nature, beautiful, idyllic location that certainly figures among the top places to visit while in Greece”.

The reader will also be able to read a description of the main town of Hydra island, which “unfolds before the eyes of the visitor as a massive amphitheater between large rocks” and the best time within the year to visit it is during Spring when the waves of tourism are still controlled, thus enabling visitors to get acquainted with the island’s 2.700 inhabitants and discover interesting facts about their every day way of living and the fact that mobility is only possible on a donkey, since there are no roads and the use of cars is prohibited.

The article also includes information about the historical past of the island which is glorious since during the 18th century the island counted 30.000 inhabitants and a huge and powerful commercial naval force and was a strong leader -both politically and militarily-. The important role of Hydra island during the Greek Revolution in 1821 is also mentioned.

Special reference is also made in the article about the decadence that the island underwent after the road network was removed and due to the island’s secluded location. However, the whole situation changed around for the island of Hydra during the 50s and 60s, when a significant wave of refurbishments of the magnificent Captain Mansions started by wealthy Athenians. This is also when foreign admirers of the island started settling in Hydra permanently. The island is known to have particularly attracted the interest of many artists who have also bought houses on the island. It was back then, that the first businesses -such as restaurants and hotels- started to flourish too.

Have you visited Hydra island lately? Now is the best time as ever to make your dream come true!
