A celebration of Spring. A praise to the flowers
The 1st of May and its celebration, has its roots back in antiquity and undoubtedly it constitutes the most important chance to praise Spring! The fifth month of the year takes its name after a Roman called Mayia which means “mother”. Celebrating the first day of May, signifies also the victory of summer over winter and customs vary according to the area we are in.
One of the most common customs in Greece, that applies to the majority of the regions across the country, is the preparation of a May wreath. To make a wreath we collect flowers that we like during our walk within nature and when we get back home we hung it outside the front door as a welcoming sign. Celebrating May Day is connected to human happiness and it is the perfect opportunity for an excursion in the beauties of nature. Wherever you are and whichever destination within Greece you have selected to visit, the locals will happily show you their own customs for this glorious day and might even tell you the story hidden behind the custom too!
Whatever you do today, do not omit to make at least a small May wreath using freshly cut wild flowers tied next to each other with a string or cord. The walk within nature will certainly invigorate you!
Have a beautiful day and enjoy nature to maximum...
