Easter in Andros island...simply unforgetable
We all know Andros island as a low key destination for a quiet getaway. During Easter, the island’s profile changes dramatically and it becomes a busy and top place to be for a unique and festive vacation. Really worthy to see, are the 3 epitaphs of the three greatest churches in the main-town Chora, on Good Friday. The epitaphs will all meet up in Kairi square together with the masses of visitors, tourists and locals. On Easter Saturday, the spirit of the day’s holiness and significance of the Resurrection of Christ, are combined with the use of thousands of firecrackers and luminous and colorful fireworks, which although noisy altogether, as much rewarding as a spectacle as ever! On Easter Sunday visit the main square of Afanous Naftis where everybody heads for a walk and coffee, right before the greatest annual feast for the Greeks, with the staffed “Labriatiko” lamb which is roasted in a traditional oven over a wood fire…an absolute cooking ritual which begins from the early Sunday morning hour, as it needs at least 8-10 to get ready and finger-licking delicious.
