Meteora - Visiting the historical Monasteries up on the rocks
The imposing rocks of Meteora have been characterized as a “preserved monument of Humanity” by UNESCO and one can visit this holy place after having crossed the immense area of the beautiful Thessalic plains. The spectacular setting will reward the visitor and apart from joining a group for a climbing session up on the rocks, there are also activities as regards to visiting the Monasteries and chapels literally “planted” in between the rocks, which are of great historical importance and of architectural and artistic interest.
1) Monastery of Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros or Megalou Meteorou
It was established in the 14th century by Osios Athanassios and it is situated on the largest rock of all named Platis Lithos. In the Monastery’s temple there are significant wall paintings of the Macedonian School worthy of admiration. You can also see the chapels of Theomitoros, of Ioannis Prodromos, of Aghion Isapostolon Konstantine & Helen and that of Aghios Nektarios.
2) Varlaam Monastery
Just opposite the Megalos Meteoros, it was established by eremite Varlaam in the mid 14th century. It is dedicated to All Saints and at the same time you can also visit the chapel of the Three Hierarchs.
3) Monastery of Aghios Stefanos
It used to be a strictly male monastery, but this changed in 1961 when it became a mixed one. Established by Osios Antonios at the beginning and up until the mid 15th century, it is dedicated to Aghios Charalambos, whose reliquary is cherished there as the most spiritual and miraculous jewel.
4) Monastery of Saint Trinity (Aghia Triada)
Up on the most impressive rocks of Meteora, it has been operating as a Monastery since 1362 and the main temple was built between 1456 and 1476. Within the Monastery you can also visit the chapel of Timiou Ioanni Prodromou .
5) Roussanou Monastery
It started off operating as a male monastery but it converted later on to a strictly female one. It’s form, as it is today, was given to it at the beginning of the 16th century by the monks Ioassaf and Maximos from the city of Ioannina in Northern Greece. It is dedicated to the Metamorfossis of Sotiros and it also commemorates Aghia Varvara (4th December).
6) Monastery of Aghios Nikolaos Anapafsas
It is the first Monastery that we come across as we ascend to Meteroa. This is where we will find the chapel of Agios Antonios where we will admire remains of significant wall paintings dating back to the 14th century.
