Lake Voulismeni: There, in Crete, where goddess Artemis used to wash her hair
This is one of the most significant and most beautiful points of interest of the area of Aghios Nikolaos in Crete island.
Lake Voulismeni, is centrally located in Aghios Nikolaos and for its panoramic view, it is best to approach the park right above it.
The lake used to be called “Vromolimni” which is rather unflattering judging from the meaning of the Greek words: “vromikos” which means dirty and “limni” meaning lake. Although, in fact, the name was justified by the unpleasant odors that complemented the lake before 1867 when a connecting channel to the sea saved the situation.
The lake has a diameter of 137 meters and during the same year, the picturesque bridge that we see nowadays was also constructed. All-in-all, the lake is a pleasant place to visit offering numerous cafes and restaurants and it constitutes a true trademark of Aghios Niikolaos.
In mythology, this is where the Greek goddesses Artemis and Athina used to wash their hair. The locals, up to the 19th century, used to also believe that the lake has no bottom and they inevitably connected its history with evil spirits and other peculiar legends.
Another important and bizarre event which took place back in 1956, is that after an explosion of the volcano in Santorini, dead fish appeared at the surface of Lake Voulismeni in Aghios Nikolaos in Crete…something which lead to a hypothesis that somehow the lake communicates underground with the island of Santorini.
The lake constitutes one of the many interesting sites to see in Aghios Nikolaos.
