Getting acquainted with Lake Plastira at the very heart of Greece
At very close proximity to the town of Trikala and at a mere distance of 25 Km from that of Karditsa at the very heart of Greece, Lake Plastira constitutes one of the most beautiful natural sceneries and among the most popular destinations to visit in Greece.
We discover it at an altitude of 800 meters and it is an easily accessible destination via autoroute.
The whole landscape will absolutely fascinate you as the lake is laterally embraced by high and heavily forested mountains, while the whole area can easily be described as a heaven on earth for nature lovers. The area is among the most popular destinations for mountain climbing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and a plethora of other sports.
Lake Plastira was created where river Tavropos previously used to stream southwords towards river Acheloos. The area was known by the name Nevropolis, possibly due to the fact that it was a natural habitat for many deer (“nevros” in Greek stands for a newborn deer).
It was in 1928, that Colonel Nikolaos Plastiras, envisaged the idea of the creation of a dam that would aid to the problem of the irrigation of the Thessalic plains, the serving with potable water of the city of Karditsa and, in addition, to the production of electricity by taking advantage of the power of falling water.
The execution of the whole project began in the 50s and although initially it included the construction of a dam out of condensed soil, it was finally made out of concrete at the site of Kakavakia and was completed by the year 1960, at which time the collection of water directly commenced.
The lake’s name was initially lake Tavropos but soon after, it was renamed to Lake Plastira. A truly amazing landscape which was soon discovered by visitors from across the country and beyond. The lake’s dam has a length of 220 meters and a height of 83 meters, while it covers a total area of 25.000 acres and its purpose is not only beneficial for the irrigation of the plains that surround it but also for the serving of potable water to the area at large.
The largest waves of visitors and tourism commenced at the beginning of the 1980s and ever since the numbers grow by the year, alongside the provided services, the sports activities and the places to eat and stay.
