Sounion : a symbol of ancient civilisation and the most impressive sunset you have ever seen
Situated at the southernmost tip of the county of Attica, the cape of Sounion is washed by eternal waves in three out of its four sides. This is where the Athenians chose to create the temple in order to honor and worship Poseidon who was the powerful and sovereign God of the sea. It is said that goddess Athena and Poseidon, had a major dispute of who will take over the intellectual hegemony of the region of Attica. Poseidon was defeated when the king of Athens chose the sacred olive tree instead of the sea horses. It is at the top of cape Sounion, nonetheless, that the inhabitants of Athens chose to construct a temple for Poseidon, in order to maintain his good will towards them.
The fortified peak of the cape’s rock has always been considered by the Athenians as a point of significant strategic importance, as it provided an uninhibited view to the entrance of the Saronic Gulf, thus, the particular point was fortified with a strong wall and guarded by well-trained men. Moreover, the naturally formatted port at the foot of the cape of Sounion was used as an advanced naval base.
Nowadays, one would find it extremely difficult to believe that there is a beach where - in fact - one can swim, right next to the significant tourist attraction and in such an extremely rocky environment. But, there is and swimming there will make you feel that you are in a secluded place with hardly any contact to the outside world! Just before entering the archaeological site of Sounion, you will spot a split of roads and a large parking space. Locate the opening of the fencing and the path and take it downhill for about 200 meters. Your view will be that of Makronisos island at the background and at the end of the path you will find yourself in a small double beach with fine pebbles that allows usage to a maximum of five or six groups of people. If you are lucky enough, you may not find nobody else there and, thus, enjoy a private swim in the most tranquil setting.
As far as your accommodation is concerned while visiting the area, The Margi hotel in Vouliagmeni constitutes the best choice, giving you a further choice of more popular and trendy beaches, as well as, a large swimming pool with stunning sea views.
