The whole project begun 10 years ago and this year too, the locals alongside many volunteers will take part in the revival of the communication system between the ancient beacon-towers and the citadels of Sifnos with the use of smoke and mirrors. This means of communication was first recorded 2.500 years ago. The odd custom is supported by the Municipality, as well as the island’s Cultural Association.
Swiftly traveling back in time, one can observe that the island’s towers were built at strategic points across the island and they formatted a network between them, as well as with the 4 ancient citadels of the island and they could send and receive signals, thus, exchange messages and communicate with each other.
The ongoing archaeological research up to today, has recorded 76 ancient towers-beacons which are unique - both in terms of construction and in terms of their numerical quantity compared to those on the other islands of the Aegean Sea. Also, in relation to the size of the island of Sifnos, we see an impressive ratio of about one tower per square kilometer which is possibly explained by the island’s wealth in its deposits of gold, lead and silver and the fear of raids from the sea. According to Herodotus, the island of Sifnos was the richest island of all.
The growing involvement of volunteers year after year and the addition of further points, indicates the dynamic of the custom which clearly evokes the archaeological richness of the island.
