Select the Athenian capital as a base and discover spectacular monuments nearby

It is of outmost importance to visit the archaeological site of the Acropolis while in Athens and visitors have had this at the top of their wish-list for many years. For admirers of ancient Greek culture and connoisseurs of Greek history, there is a plethora of other significant monuments and archaeological sites at close proximity to the capital which they can easily access with short day-trips.

Our first option constitutes a visit to the Oracle of Delphi which, undoubtedly, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and very close to Athens. The mysterious atmosphere of the whole setting will absolutely impress you and this is not by surprise since the location was believed to be the center of the world, while within the archaeological site athletic games used to be held in honor of Olympian God Apollo. In fact, the amphitheater and the stadium that we nowadays see on site in Delphi, were both constructed and used for this purpose.

Another trip that we can organize while in Athens. is to the ancient temple of Poseidon in the area of Sounion and at the southernmost tip of Attica. The exquisite temple of Poseidon is located opposite the point where Aegeas - the king of Athens - committed suicide by jumping in the sea, in mistakably believing that his son, Thiseas, was defeated by Minotaur. This is how the Aegean Sea was named. In addition, cape Sounion offers the most magnificent sunset in Athens.

Towards a different direction and in traveling to the Peloponnese, we discover ancient Korinth after crossing over Isthmos Canal. Located very close to the contemporary town of Korinth, a visit to the ancient citadel of Korinth and the castle will reward us with stunning views of the region plus significant samples of ancient Greek civilization. We remain in the Peloponnesian peninsula and continue our drive southwards in order to reach the ancient theater of Epidaurus which is still used for important theatrical and musical performances attracting visitors and spectators alike.

The area of Mycenae is, indeed, our next stop and we head in that direction in order to admire the ruins and monuments of the famous Mycenaean civilization and acquire a taste of this glorious era. In visiting the historical tombs of the kings that ruled during the particular era, we become witnesses of the epoch’s luxury and grandeur.

The Greek capital is magnificent for tourism during the summer months of July and August. Select it as your base and begin with a series of interesting short day-trips to discover the ancient Greek civilization close to you.

For your accommodation, choose to stay at the Athenian Riviera and at the coasts of the area of Vouliagmeni in particular. The Margi hotel is considered to be one of the best -if not the best- boutique hotels in Athens and seems to have brought into existence its own exquisite microcosm: of relaxation and intrinsic luxury, which could only be appealing to those who appreciate the truly authentic hospitality.
