When the brilliance of the August full moon sheds its light upon antiquities

Regardless of your location tonight, the beautiful spectacle of the massive August full moon is bound to reach you at every corner of the country. 100 archaeological sites will be open to the public for free this evening, so select one closer to you and enjoy the antiquities in the bright light of the full moon and in the company of musical events. 

In Athens

The Acropolis Museum celebrates the August Full Moon in the company of Greek and foreign melodies from the historical band of the Athens Military Music. Join the event at the forecourt of the museum as of 21:30. The Museum will remain open until midnight (free entrance from 9 pm onwards), thus giving visitors the opportunity to tour the exhibiting spaces and to enjoy the views of the Sacred Rock under the full moon sky of Attica region.

Also at Philopapou hill the Philharmonic Orchestra of Athens will present the musical event titled “At Filopapou hill my love is somewhere heidden" (starting at 21.30).

The National Archaeological Museum is opening its doors to the public for free for the periodical exhibition "The Antikithera Shipwreck - The Ship, the Treasures, the Mechanism" (open from 20:00 to 23:00). Also, the gardens of the Athens Numismatic Museum will be hosting a musical event with the support of the Museum Catering Company SA (with Lina Nikolakopoulou and Argiro Kaparou starting at 21.00).

 

In the rest of Greece

According to the announcement by the Ministry of Culture there are 9 more events portraying tonight’s spectacular full moon:

 Hill Arouvigli Ierissou (within the archaeological zone): Event with Greek contemporary music in collaboration with the association "Friends of the Environment", "Ierissos inhabitants of Thessaloniki" and "Ierissos Professionals".

• Ancient market of Philipi: "Music notes of the Full Moon" by the Municipal Odeum of the city of Kavala.

  Archaeological Museum of Thassos island: "Moonlight Sonata” by George Ritsos by the Municipal Theatrical Stage of the port of Thassos.

• Archaeological Site of Kria Vrissi, Municipality of Prosotsanis: "Ancient Greek Spirit, Sound and Light" from the Hercules Sideris band.

• Archaeological Site of Platanias, Municipality of Paranestiou: "Astronomical Observation" with the "Pegasus" Association of Astrophysicists of the city of Drama.

• Archaeological Museum of Kavala: "Full Moon at the Museum" by the Association of Tourist Guides of Thessaloniki and Northern Greece.

• Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa: Music event in cooperation with the Chamber of Thesprotia.

Archaeological Site of Elea: Traditional music concert in collaboration with the Municipality of Souli.

"Justinian" Center of Byzantine Culture in Chalkidiki (Nea Flogita): "Let’s dance under the moonlight" musical evening with DJ Stathis Panagiotopoulos and broadcasted live by the internet radio station «Hellenic World Radio».

In addition, in the town of Trikala in Thessaly and at the Trikala Byzantine Castle in particular, the orchestra "VASSILIS TSITSANIS" will host a musical event at 21:30 at a stage set under the symbol of the city of Trikala – the Old Clock of the fort –. Important songs by significant cultural Greek composers will fill you with feelings of passion, love, lust, the longing.

As the famous song by Greek singer Haroula Alexiou says…”there is a full moon tonight and it is nice.”
