Excursion at the Cave of Myths

Excursion at the Cave of Myths

Only for this weekend, 31/08 and 01/09, the gates of the underground palace are open to the public without an entrance fee.

You will find it up on Mount Ziria in the county of Korinthia in the Peloponnese and at the eastern slopes in particular, at an altitude of 1.700 meters. In the antiquity, the caves were a place where God Hermes (Mercury) was worshiped and a place of pilgrimage for whoever was in need of help of some divine powers. In effect, according to mythology this actual spot was chosen by Hermes himself to hide the immortal cows he had stolen from his brother Apollo. Another myth mentions that it was here, at the depths of the cave, that Hermes was actually born. Hermes was the son of Zeus and Maia one of the seven Pleiades. At this exact spot was where a mythical grass with magical properties called Moli grew and which Hermes gave to Odysseus to protect him from the spells of Circe.

In visiting the Cave of Hermes you will admire of how the virtuosity of nature unfolds in its 7 distinct chambers, blooming with massive stalactites and stalagmites that actually prove the age of the Cave dating back to millions of years.

Wear your appropriate shoes and become explorers of the past with a large dose of mythology and historical facts mixed in one.
