Delos island hosts specimens of exemplary ancient Greek history

At the very heart of the Cyclades the pulse of history and antiquity beats loud and clear. According to mythology, the sacred island of Delos was approached by Leto who magically discovered it and made it her shelter being chased by goddess Hera and the place she chose to give birth to the twin Olympian gods, Apollo and Artemis. The ancient Greeks believed that the island was actually floating in the sea and used to call it “adelos” -meaning hidden- Asteria.

After the birth of Apollo and Artemis the island’s name changed from "adelos” to Delos -meaning apparent- and according to the rest of the myth it was anchored to the bottom of the sea with diamond chains. Nowadays, it emerges from the deep blue of the Aegean Sea willing to reveal its thousands of secrets to its visitors.

In visiting the island of Delos, the visitor will have the opportunity to admire a plethora of archaeological monuments of great significance. The whole island constitutes a massive archaeological site divided into groups of monuments: The Temple of Apollo, the Lake district and the monuments at the northern side of the sanctuary, the Theater district at the southern side of the sanctuary and the region of Mount Kynthos where one can admire the temples of various deities.
