A voyage back in time, at the medieval Old Town of Rhodes

The Medieval Old Town of Rhodes is more than able to convey us to a nostalgic setting back in time. There are more than ten alternative options to enter the medieval part of the Old Town of Rhodes but possibly the most known and impressive of all is the Marine Gate or Porta Marina -as it is otherwise referred to- and which will lead you straight to the network of countless stone-paved alleyways. The medieval walls that surround Rhodes Old Town were built on the 14th and 15th century and reach a length of 4 Km in total. There are as many as 10 other Gates to the Town which allow entrance to their respective neighborhoods within this beautiful area of the island.

Rhodes Town is referred in history as far back as 408 BC and nowadays presents two very different faces between which it tries to balance…Its medieval facet with its contemporary streak. The Knights of St. John are accountable for its medieval appearance (14th – 15th century AD). Walking through its dense network of streets, we come across both its contemporary side at Miltiadou street where most tourist shops are located and at Sokratous street, the High Street market, where one can shop for fine jewelry and expensive fur, while numerous interesting sites on the way show us the rich history of the area and the glamorous past of a different epoch.

Among the most important sites of the Medieval Old Town of Rhodes at your disposal, are: the Palace of Grand Master which was reconstructed by the Italians in 1940 and is located right at the end of the street of the Knights and opposite the church of St. John.  One of the most significant places that the visitor must pay a visit to, is the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes constituting one of the best museums across Greece and exhibiting a great number of sculptures and other works of art. Hosted within the old Knights’ Hospital makes it even more special and worthy of your visit. As you walk along Αristotelous street you will end up at the Square of the Jewish Martyrs where you will see an impressive fountain decorated with three large metallic hippocampuses. The square takes its name after the 2.000 Jewish inhabitants of this quarter that had been sent over to stay in war camps during the 2nd World War.
