River Aoos in Northern Pindos. An unspoilt paradise from many aspects.
River Aoos has a length of 260 km in total, 70 of which flowing within Greek territory in the region of Epirus and 190 in Albanian, with the sole purpose of reaching the Adriatic sea. The gurgling Aoos is one of the most important rivers in Greece and greatly adds to the overall beauty and uniqueness of the nature spreading in abundance within the National Park of Northern Pindos.
In the mid 80s a damn was constructed in the area of Pentalonia in order to curb the momentum of the river and create the homonymous artificial lake at an altitude of 1.340 meters. Whichever season of the year you select to visit the region, the beauty of the landscape will absolutely enchant you.
The river flows through a large part of the Vikos- Aoos National Park resulting to a beautiful canyon between the northern slopes of Mount Timfi and the southern end of Mount Smolikas. The length of the gorge is of a total of 8 km and its width varies from 300 meters to 2.5 kilometers. The flora in this section is particularly rich, while within the canyon you may find interesting in visiting the Stomiou Monastery. At the far end of the canyon you will come across the stone bridge of Konitsa dating back to the year 1870. Aoos river also has at least two large tributaries, named Sarantaporos and Voidomatis passing through a great number of traditionally preserved villages and smaller settlements.
River Aoos boasts countless routes for rafting and all you have to do is to select the most fascinating one that suits you best, adjusting your fun and exterme experience to the particular level of difficulty that you prefer. The whole area constitutes an eternal source of inspiration, as it combines moments of extreme joy within nature, in tie to a glorious ambience of absolute relaxation and total tranquillity.
