Glögg: the festive mulled wine that will gladden our hearts and keep us warm for Christmas
This is a relatively new drinking concept for Greece which originates from the...far north and will definitely give us a new way to drink-the-day away on Christmas Day. Not only will your guests be delighted with this creative and alternative beverage, but they will thank you for warming them up!
It is a Scandinavian custom but we also come across it in Europe and the Balkans in a great number of variations. You will hear it being referred to as Glögg in Scandinavia, mulled wine in Britain, Glühwein in Germany, vin chaud in France...whichever name you give to it, this will be the best Christmas alcoholic beverage you have ever tasted. The colder the weather outside, the more you will enjoy it especially in the company of your best friends and a burning fireplace! Head to the kitchen and make some Glögg. What a lovely way to gladden your heart alongside the hearts of the people you love...
Glögg is very easy to prepare and chances are you already have the ingredients readily available at home. Its majestic fragrance will sooth your senses and just a single sip will make you a true fanatic.
Simple recipe for Glögg
Ingredients (for 4-6 glasses)
1 bottle of red dry wine or port
1/2 cup of sugar – preferably brown
a fistful of black raisins
2 sticks of cinnamon
5-6 cloves
a tad of nutmeg
the skin of an orange
Preparation
Place all the ingredients in a saucepan or a vessel and start steering occasionally until the spices extract their fragrances but before it reaches boiling – point. Taste and add more sugar if you like but try not to make the beverage too sweet. Serve it hot or warm in a wine glass for a festive occasion or a tea mug for a cozier occasion of relaxation by the fireplace. Don’t forget the cinnamon cookies to go with it.
