Santorini’s sacred wine: Vinsanto

Santorini’s sacred wine: Vinsanto

Santorini’s Vinsanto is a traditional sweet wine belonging to the category of P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin Santorini). Its dark red, white or amber color, its fragrance and its fruity taste make it absolutely irresistible. Cinamon, orange, raisin and even chocolate are only a few of the flavors and fragrances within a bottle of Vinsanto. It is prepared from prime and mature grapes which are let to dry under the sun for 10 to 15 days and then let to ferment within wooden barrels for at least 4 months.

Extremely sweet and with an acid taste it acts as an equilibrium giving the chance to the person tasting it to be completely inundated by feelings.

But where does this sweet wine take its name from?

There are two theories concerning the acquisition of name. From the Italian “vino santo” which means  sacred wine or according to the second one which derives from the wine's origination “vino di Santorini” meaning wine from Santorini.

How to enjoy it more…

Vinsanto is ideally served at 8 to 11 degrees Celsius. It is offered as an aperitif or as a digestive after a meal. It is the perfect combination to cheeses and cold-cuts but also deserts such as chocolate and ice-cream. In combining it with food, it teams up with tender veal filet for example. It is also used in patisserie with absolutely amazing results.

Whichever way you decide to try it first, the sure thing is that you will

keep searching for new ways to enjoy it.
