Traveling by train becomes fashionable again. What a bewildering way to travel…
Across Greece there is a sound network of rail tracks which pass through mountains, tunnels and over bridges in order to connect large and smaller cities and villages between them. The positive thing about traveling by train in Greece, is that the network takes you from A to B through a very different scenery than the road network, thus, it promises unforgettable experiences to the tourists who chose to see the beauties of the country this way.
Among those exquisite rail routes of the country, is that which connects the village of Diakofto and the village of Kalavrita in the county of Achaia in the Peloponnese. Both the train and the rails are of particular type and it is called the rack railway or “Odondotos” in Greek.
The train ride lasts just below an hour and, literally, ascends through the gorge of Vouraikos making a stop at the village of Zachlorou before finally arriving in Kalavrita. Make this unique trip by train through superb natural landscapes and capture the gurgling waters of the river of Vouraikos, the sharp cliffs and the huge mountains around you. Kalavrita village is at an altitude of 750 meters and has plenty of interesting spots to see, numerous monasteries to visit and a variety of cafes and tavernas at your disposal.
You can catch the rack railway from the train station of Diakofto. The trains were changed about 5 years ago and they are brand new, offering large windows for ample views to the majestic nature of the area. The creation of this rail route begun in 1889 and the first day of operation was the 10th of March 1896. Since then, the “Odondotos” train travels to Kalavrita and back, every day regardless of the weather conditions.
