ATHENS

A city that never sleeps, a modern European metropolis irresistibly charming to every visitor...

Did you know that:

  • The municipality of Vouliagmeni was created in 1935 and includes the areas Small and Large Kavouri, Saint Nikolas and Laimos.

  • In order to access the area of Glyfada up until 1928, you could either take the main Faliro road by the seaside or by horse carriage via the Athens - Vari road.

  • Access between Athens and Voulagmeni was established around the year 1920 where a four-horse carriage called the "arabas" could be used.

  • In 1955, Glyfada's Town Hall moved to a building which was built in 1925 and was previously a night club called Trouvil.

  • The hospital Asklipio Voulas was established in 1920 and its initial aim was to cure patients of tuberculosis.

  • In the area of Αnavissos there have been recorded traces of human presence from prehistoric times.

  • In the area of Glyfada, where today the night club Asteria is located, there used to be the first mixed baths for both men and women. They actually used to be a favourite meeting point for the "good society" of Greece.

  • Glyfada was envisaged to be a residential area near the sea which would attract Athenians for a swim. This is exactly what its founder Piros Karapanos had in mind when it all started in 1920.

  •  The area of Glyfada at large is one of the richest areas of Athens today. The area's rapid development is connected to the establishment of US bases in the sub-area of Elliniko.

  • The largest tunnel in the world is 800 m. in length and is found in Lake Vouliagmeni. There are thirteen more tunnels in the area.
