PELOPONNESE

Local Gastronomy

The region of the Peloponnese will tempt you with superb tastes and dishes for which only the finest and freshest ingredients are used from a blessed and self-sufficient land that produces everything. All-in-all, you will have the opportunity to taste a rich variety of local and traditional recipes and mouth-watering flavours. At this point, we must also mention that the Peloponnese is well known for its wines, such as the “Agiorgitiko” from the area of Nemea of Korinth, as well as of its production of extra virgin olive oil in the area of Kalamata, of the Arkadian meat and of the cheese varieties - especially from the county of Messinia -. All of the above, constitute famous products that Greece is proud to export to countries all over the world.

Do not omit to try the following: the almond macaroons, the pies stuffed with sweet pumpkin and the mountainous "chortopita" which is hand-made pie with fresh herbs, the roast piglet garnished with potatoes, the sweet "diples", the "zamblarikos" which is a soup of wheat boiled in milk for the cold winter nights after skiing, the traditional "kayianas" which is a nourishing omelette with salted pork meat, egg and fresh tomatoes, the Tsakonian eggplants, any of the varieties of meat-pie and chicken-pie, the famous walnut pie for dessert and, last but not least, the tantalising “cock au vin” which is baked rooster marinated in wine lusciously garnished with pasta or fried potato chips.
