It is described as the Lady of mountainous Arcadia. An absolute must for nature lovers, it will welcome you in adventurous walks all year round. Its relatively small distance from Athens - a mere 2 hour drive - makes it easily accessible for many Athenians and visitors of the capital of Greece alike.
You see there are not many destinations that can take you away to a voyage of relaxation and rejuvenation and be so easily accessible at the same time.
You will have to climb at 1.040 meters above the ground in order to reach the welcoming settlement of Vitina. Traditionalism and superiority are two words to describe the angelic scenery spreading around you, from the mountainous Menalo at the background, to the picturesque setting of the village, all of which will make you wonder if this is for real or if you are imagining it...The green of the fir and pine forest will overflow your full spectrum of senses as your lungs will fill up with the freshest of air. Yes, this is for real.
Easily noticeable is the fact that the buildings in Vitina but also in the villages that surround it, follow the traditional architectural style of the region. In the east side of the settlement you will come across the well preserved basilicas of Agion Apostolon and that of Kimiseos tis Theotokou, whereas in the central square of the village you will see the church of St. Trifonas which dates back to 1846. Don’t hesitate to visit the rich Folklore Museum and the public library. For those of you looking for love...do walk along the Dromos tis Agapis (Road of Love) where the young people of the village used to flirt “legally” in the old days, with a sole aim, that of marriage.
While in Vitina, you will feel that time has stoped. The main road of the settlement may give a lively tempo to the whole village, but nature continues its never ending purpose everywhere else you look. Just a tip: Don’t stay in Vitina all day and everyday of your stay. Visit the little villages around it. You will not be at all disappointed.
