Secrets of historic importance

Some of the most important city-states of ancient Greece were located in the Peloponnese, such as: Sparta, Korinth and Argos. The Mycenaean civilization flourished here and the region has been inhabited by the three most significant Greek tribes of antiquity: the Achaeans, the Ionians and the Dorians.

The Peloponnese is considered to be one of the most fertile regions of Greece with Argolida and Korinth plains being cultivated with all sorts of trees (especially orange trees, lemon trees and olives), vineyards and vegetables.

The peninsula bears a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age and it is the absolute cradle of Hellenism, manifesting important specimens of Greek civilisation in numerous archaeological sites. In its newer history, this is where the Greek war of Independence begun in 1821 and where the first ever capital city of Greece as an independent state - the town of Nafplion - is located, to the south-east.

Since 2004 the Peloponnesian peninsula acquired a second crossing to the Greek mainland, apart from the Isthmus Canal. That of the Rio / Antirio bridge which is a stunning contemporary construction just off the city of Patras in the county of Achaia.
