Santorini: Waving the flag of the leading gastronomic destination for the year 2013

Good news for lovers of Santorini island ! In 2013 we have an additional reason to visit this unique island of Greece especially for the gourmands among us. Santorini island will dedicate the upcoming year to gastronomy, giving us numerous opportunities to be marvelously dined with delectable dishes and wined with its “ambrosia”...

In the past few years, an increasing number of destinations across Greece have been vigorously promoting their local gastronomy as a pole of attraction for tourists and visitors. Without doubt, the island of Santorini has already managed to be proudly listed among the most known and appreciated destinations with regards to the culinary arts. The richness of locally sourced agricultural products, i.e. 'fava' split peas and 'tomataki' fresh tomatoes but also an immense variety of local wines, have greatly attributed to the formation of this notion enabling Santorini island to wave the flag of the leading gastronomic destination of the country...and beyond.

During the official announcement last week, the mayor of Santorini highlighted how important it is for the island to make the news for an elongated period of time. This will greatly compensate the efforts of many years, especially during those difficult times for the country in which the sustainability of Tourism seems to be the only way to go.

At the time of the announcement, the official logo of this initiative was also presented. A logo that was inspired by an ancient vase dating back to the 18th century BC, recently discovered by archaeologists in the area of Akrotiri.
