Tripoli: The town's perennial theater re-opens

The Municipal Theater “Malliaropoulion” of Tripolis, re-opens its doors to the public on the 22nd of March.

The official first day of Spring, was chosen by the Municipality of Tripolis as the day of the much anticipated inauguration of the Malliaropoulion Theater.

This theater constitutes an emblem for the town of Tripolis since the town’s course in history resembles crudely to the adventurous existence of the theater itself. As a fact, the theater has been characterized as one of the very few perennial theaters of the country which are still preserved.

As far as its history is concerned...

It was a donation to the inhabitants of the town of Tripolis by doctor Ion. Malliaropoulos. The project was designed by architect Anastasios Metaxas who had also carried out the project of the construction of the Greek Palaces (the “Anaktora”). Its initial operation begun on February 7th 1910 with a very impressive program and hosting numerous theatrical groups and the most significant actors of the Greek theatrical stage.

Up until the mid 60s it continued to host a few touring theater companies and various other local events, although its main use was as a cinema.

It was during the dictatorship in the 70s that the theater’s operation was interrupted for an indefinite period of time, which brings us to today’s long anticipated re-opening.

This theatrical space has been through a fair number of troubled days in the course of its existence, therefore, one may say that the 22nd of March is, in essence, the first day of its new life.

If you are going to be visiting the town of Tripolis for a day-break or a long weekend, you may well choose to be present for the theater’s inauguration.
