A visit to Kapsia Caves in mountainous Arcadia

Heading north for about 1.5 Km from Kapsia village of the region of Mantinea in the Peloponnese, we come across Kapsia Caves which accounts as one of the 10 most significant caves across Greece. The unique cave opened its doors to the public relatively recently -on the 19th of December 2010-, thus there are still many people who have either not visited yet or, indeed, are unaware of its existence.

The impressive cave was discovered in 1887 by the French archaeologist Gustav Fouzer and the first proper research of its interior was carried out in 1902 by a Greek-French team of cavers, where human bones were discovered which according to the team was attributed to people who had drowned within the caves from flooding in the past.

Its interior is absolutely formidable with plenty of colorful stalactites and stalagmites creating unique formations. The red and yellow stalagmites and stalactites, as well as, the turquoise shades on its wall cavities will absolutely enchant you. There is a total march of at least 330 meters which is very well lit through the well-selected and created paths of the caves. Visitors of the caves will have the opportunity to visit both of its chambers: The "hall of marvels” and the “hall of bones".

As far as your accommodation in the region is concerned, Archontiko Kaltezioti undoubtedly constitutes the best choice. Within the private estate of Archontiko Kaltezioti, hospitality and pampering of guests does not limit to just within the rooms.
