RHODES

The most cosmopolitan island of the Dodekanese, narrates stories from the past to the bright present!

1.

The Old Town of Rhodes which was built by the Knights of Saint John and remains one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, representing one of the most important Monuments of World Cultural Heritage according to UNESCO. There are as many as 10 distinct entrances – Gates to the town and you can get more information about them by pressing here. You will be thrilled just by walking along the “road of the Knights” with its unique and grandiose buildings. Visit also the Palace of Grand Master and the renovated Yeni Hamam (Turkish bath) in Arionos square.

The Archaeological Museum which is hosted in the building of the “Hospital of Knights”, the Byzantine Museum and also the Public Gallery in the Old Town which exhibits a rich collection of contemporary Greek paintings.

3.

The castle of Monolithos which is listed among the best preserved Venetian castles and offers breathtaking views of the sea and the two islets opposite to it.

4.

The monument of Kalithea Springs which is located only 9 km from the town of Rhodes and where -in the past- healing waters were welled out. Nowadays, it will attract you for its particular architecture and for its function as a high level conference and events venue and for its rich cultural activity for the local society.

5.

The area of Seven Springs which is located at 3 km east of the village of Kolimpia. Worthy of your visit if you are interested in taking a long promenade in its cool, rich green oasis and for seeing the artificial lake that collects potable water for the wider area (accessible either through a tunnel or on foot via a path).

The island has numerous picturesque villages. Try to visit as many as you can fit in your schedule, especially village Fanes - for its brightly coloured houses -, as well as the villages of Lahania, Koskinou and Archangelos.

The numerous wonderful beaches along the 220 km long coastline. Here is a list of a few suggestions according to your tastes: If you are looking for organised beaches with all sorts of facilities, then you should opt for the beaches of Elli, Ialisos, Kolimpia and Faliraki. For water sports and other activities, prefer Genadi and Prassonissi. If you are on a family vacation, choose among the beaches of Tsambika, Afantou, Vliha and Kalathos and if you want to try the “alternative” beaches which are the least crowded, then you will love any of the following: Agios Georgios,Kallithea, Kiotari, Haraki, Agios Pavlos, Antony Queen and Agia Agathi.

The Valley Of Butterflies is a green valley located west of the Old Town at a distance of 27 km and attracts a large number of butterflies especially during the seasons of spring and autumn. It is a popular tourist attraction especially for nature lovers and those who love capturing peculiar phenomena with their camera! Open daily between 08.00 and 19.00. Entrance fee: 5€.

9.

The Monastery of Panagia Tsambika. This is where the miraculous hagiographic icon of Virgin Mary (Panagia Tsambika in Greek) is located. The icon is said to help reproductively challenged women conceive. It attracts women visitors from all over the world who devote their prayers to her in order to get pregnant. Her sacred name is celebrated on the 8th of September.

The Monastery of Kalopetra which is situated south of the Valley of Butterflies and constitutes a really enchanting location worthy of your visit while in Rhodes. Also the Monastery of Archangel Michail in the area of Thari for its splendid wall hagiographies.

 

Lindos

1.

The numerous Mansions which used to be owned by naval captains and which constitute a sample of the local aristocratic architecture. You will also admire the popular “hohlakia” which are the pebbles used for the decoration of the floors of front yards.

Enjoy the endless promenades in the labyrinth – like alleys of the settlement and go for a shopping spree to the numerous shops available.    

3.

The Acropolis of Lindos which is situated on a rocky slope 116 meters high above the contemporary settlement of Lindos and dates back to the 9th century BC. On its southern side you will find the impressive Temple of Athena Lindia which was constructed in 300 BC.

4.

Swim at the crystal clear waters of the small but amazingly beautiful central beach of Lindos.

5.

The bay of Agios Pavlos where the homonymous church is also located. This is an ideal beach for those who are wishing to avoid the crowds and are seeking for moments of tranquillity instead.
