Loussios river gorge: a landscape of outstanding natural beauty
Loussios gorge is one of the main attractions of nature in the county of Arcadia in the Peloponnese and an area cherishing numerous historic monasteries and churches that we can visit as part of our weekend getaway.
Loussios river is approximately 25 km long and a tributary of Alphios river stemming from ancient Theissoa and the ridge of the mountains of Lagkadion. It passes west of the village of Dimitsana and around 2.5 km northwest of village Karytaina. According to mythology this is where Zeus was bathed by the three nymphs Theissoa, Neda and Agno.
The wider area is named Gortinia and Loussios crosses it, thus, yielding exceptionally beautiful sceneries of alternating colors and geological marvels. Hiking in the area is an absolute must in wearing comfortable shoes which will take you to the countless churches and monasteries located on steep cliffs. Most of those buildings date back to the mid-Byzantine and post-Byzantine period and are of historical importance.
Crossing the gorge accounts as a revitalizing experience for the visitor who will also have plenty of opportunities to capture majestic landscapes on the way. The paths will lead you to Ancient Gortina at close proximity to village Elliniko and there are many variations that you can choose and pick from. We suggest you begin your day with a hot beverage and freshly made apple-pie at the main square of the picturesque village of Dimitsana, head towards the Monastery of Moni Filosofou, then follow the river banks of Loussios towards the Monastery of Moni Prodromou and end up at Ancient Gortina.
Among the highly picturesque villages of mountainous Arcadia, we also distinguish those of Kapsia and Levidi where you can make your accommodation arrangements. Trésor Hotels & Resorts has discovered two accommodation treasures for us which are none other than Archontiko Kaltezioti in Kapsia village and Villa Vager in Levidi village. Enjoy a lovely weekend in nature and at the same time at close proximity to the capital.
